Digestive problems

Morning sickness

Many pregnant women (70%) suffer from sickness, especially at the start of pregnancy. These symptoms usually disappear or improve at around month 4.

Try the following tips to help alleviate morning sickness:

  • eat a small snack (crispbread, Knäckebrot, petit beurre biscuit) before getting up;
  • eat small meals at regular intervals;
  • avoid smells and foods which trigger your sickness;
  • eat more carbohydrate-rich foods such as: dry toast or crispbreads, breakfast cereals, fruit or vegetable salads;
  • eat less fatty and sugary food.

Gastric acid

Heartburn can flare up at any time during pregnancy, but generally the symptoms are worse towards the end of the pregnancy. This is a common problem affecting 30-50% of pregnant women.

You can help alleviate heartburn by:

  • eating slowly and calmly, and drinking still water, in particular, between meals rather than while eating;
  • eating light meals at regular intervals (3 meals and 2-3 snacks);
  • avoiding heavy meals before going to bed;
  • sleeping with your chest slightly propped up, rather than lying flat;
  • avoiding acidic and spicy foods.

Constipation

35-40% of pregnant women suffer from constipation during their pregnancy.

To prevent constipation:

  • drink plenty of water;
  • eat more fibre-rich foods [wholemeal bread, cereals, brown rice, vegetables, legumes and (fresh or dried) fruits];
  • exercise regularly.
